After rebounding nicely from their tournament opening loss against the USA by beating Denmark 6-1, Canada now looks to keep climbing the group A standings against Switzerland.
Though they fell behind by a goal against the Danes, victory was never in doubt, as Canada steamrolled their opponents the rest of the way. Peppering Thomas Lillie with 58 shots, they had six different goal scorers chip in en route to their decisive victory. Though Lillie played admirably, it simply wasn’t enough against the relentless Canadians.
Mackenzie Blackwood has now served his suspension, and figures to be the starting goaltender for the Canadian side. Mason McDonald looked pretty shaky against the USA, and didn’t have a ton of work against Denmark, so it makes sense for Canada to give the start to Blackwood, and see if he can carry the team moving forward.
Switzerland, on the other hand, lost their last match against the Danes, who earned their first ever regulation victory at the tournament. It essentially came down to a goaltending duel between Thomas Lillie and Joren van Pottelberghe, and the former would come out as the winner in a tight 2-1 contest.
On paper, Canada is clearly the better squad, but with two consecutive relegation losses already, the Swiss are looking to avoid relegation. They’re not going to lay down, so Canada will need to bring their best game to ensure victory.
