Bulldogs Weekly Report: Christian Thomas is heating up in Hamilton

The Games

Vs the Rochester Amerks

With the Sabres off for the night this game was played at the First Niagara Center in Buffalo, and the Bulldogs and Amerks put on quite the show for those in attendance. Joey MacDonald and Andrey Makarov kept the game scoreless through the opening period, which included an extended 5-on-3 for Hamilton that they were unable to convert on. The second period was a different story however, as Hamilton and Rochester combined for five goals in the frame. T.J. Hensick scored his first as a Bulldog when he converted a Gabriel Dumont pass into a top corner snipe to open the scoring. Less than a minute later, the red hot Sven Andrighetto blew a shot past Makarov to increase Hamilton’s lead. Rochester would storm back with goals by Mikhail Grigorenko, Joel Armia, and Luke Adam to take the lead, and those three goals would be enough to ensure the victory, as Hamilton was unable to pot one more to force overtime.

Vs The Charlotte Checkers

Hamilton stopped their losing skid at three games in their first ever match up against the Charlotte Checkers. Michael Condon got the nod in net, and made 26 saves on 27 shots to earn the win for Hamilton, while Drew MacIntyre took the loss for Charlotte. Christian Thomas also notched his third goal of the season after Joe Finley sprung him on a breakaway. Not to be outdone, Darren Dietz blasted in his first professional goal less than a minute later to increase the Hamilton lead to two. Captain Gabriel Dumont would add an empty net goal to seal the 3-1 win for the Bulldogs.

Vs the Charlotte Checkers

After edging the Checkers 3-1, the Bulldogs would concede defeat 2-1 in an afternoon rematch in Charlotte. Condon received his second straight start, and again put in a solid performance, making 31 saves on 33 shots against. Christian Thomas continued on his scoring streak by notching his fourth goal of the year, with the assists going to Mac Bennett and Charles Hudon. Greg Nemisz would score twice for Charlotte and Drew MacIntyre would make 24 saves in the Checkers win.

The Bulldogs currently sit at 3-4-2-0 with 8 points, which places them 11th in the Western Conference, and tied for 3rd in the North Division. On a positive note, the Hamilton penalty kill ranks first overall in the AHL with a 92.9% success rate. The power play though, is struggling at 29th in the AHL at 6.1%. The Bulldogs will be back in action on Tuesday November 4th against the Rochester Amerks at 10:15 AM at the First Ontario Center.

Player of the Week: Christian Thomas

Last season was a rough one for Christian Thomas as he battled injuries, inconsistent linemates and poor shooting luck. This season however, the young sniper seems to have found his game, and is tied for the team lead in goals with linemate Sven Andrighetto. Thomas had a big week on the score sheet by tallying an assist and two goals, as the Bulldogs went 1-2 against Charlotte and Rochester. Thomas notched an assist on Sven Andrighetto’s second period goal against the Amerks, and during the two games against the Checkers he would score a goal in each.
