Early in the third period of the Montreal Canadiens’ game versus the Florida Panthers on Thursday, Alex Newhook crashed into the side of the net, with his foot taking the full force of the contact. He went down behind the net, and didn’t even attempt to get up, waiting for teammates to escort him off the ice, as he put no weight on his left leg.

The team announced on Saturday that he suffered a high ankle sprain and will be out 10-12 weeks. Although not great news, it isn’t as serious as it potentially could have been given the nature of the collision.

Newhook is tied with Cole Caufield for the team lead in goals with seven, and five back of the duo of Caufield and Nick Suzuki in points. He has become a key part of the team’s offence since making his move to the wing.

The Habs’ next game in Saturday night at home versus the Detroit Red Wings. The team recalled Mitchell Stephens from the Laval Rocket to take his spot on the roster.
