Failing to score a goal versus Sweden on Friday, Canada is going to be eager to fix some of its issues in the final preliminary-round game. That’s bad news for Germany, which needs a point to pass Latvia in the standings and avoid the single-game relegation that awaits the group’s fifth-place team.
Germany had its fate in its own hands yesterday facing Latvia, a game it lost by a rather shocking score of 6-2. Latvia have been outscored 20-0 going into the contest, but one 60-minute effort may have secured their spot in the Top Division for at least another year.
It will be good for Canada to face a desperate opponent as it tries to get back on track. Germany already pulled off an upset of Finland to start things off on Boxing Day, so the Canadian coaching staff will know this isn’t an opponent that will roll over and give up three points. Canada will be favoured for the win, but that’s not to say Germany won’t make the defending champs earn it.
