2023 PWHL Draft: Montreal selects Erin Ambrose, Kristin O’Neill with their first two picks

With the sixth and seventh overall picks in the 2023 PWHL Draft, Montreal has selected defender Erin Ambrose and forward Kristin O’Neill

Ambrose played for Les Canadiennes in the CWHL. In the CWHL’s last season, she won the league’s best defender award with six goals and 18 assists for 24 points in 26 games. She had nine points in seven games at the 2022 Olympics and seven points in four games at the 2023 World Championships.

O’Neill trained in Montreal at the Centre 21.02. She finished tied for fourth in PWHPA scoring last year, tied with Laura Stacey. She had nine goals and 12 assists in 20 games. Montreal now has three of the top five players in PWHPA scoring last year, joining Marie-Philip Poulin and Laura Stacey

Monday is a historic day in the PWHL and in women’s hockey as the six teams fill out their roster with 15 more players. The draft will get teams to 18 players. A draft pick does not mean the player will suit up for said team as they still have to negotiate – and accept – a contract.

Montreal holds the last pick in all odd-numbered rounds and the first pick in all even-numbered rounds, meaning they will pick back-to-back except for their last pick in the 15th round. Montreal signed Marie-Philip Poulin, Laura Stacey, and Ann-Renée Desbiens in free agency. Their general manager is Danièle Sauvageau and head coach is Kori Cheverie.

They will also select at picks 18, 19, 30, 31, 42, 43, 54, 55, 66, 67, 78, 79, 90. We will have a full draft recap.
