The Montreal Canadiens retained their spot at fourth after a 5-on-3 chance quickly turned into a short-handed goal against in their game with the New Jersey Devils.

The Colorado Avalanche saw a 3-1 lead slip away in the third, but held on to at least get their game versus the Anaheim Ducks to overtime to claim a critical point. The result pushed the St. Louis Blues out of the post-season picture.

Lowlight of the night

Today’s schedule: The Buffalo Sabres surely won’t be catching the Toronto Maple Leafs off guard tonight after defeating them one week ago. Ottawa will be in tough against a determined Winnipeg Jets team … not that they seem to mind losing. The Devils’ win made an improbable berth for the Florida Panthers now nearly impossible, but a win over the Carolina Hurricanes still keeps them in the race. St. Louis needs to beat a hot Washington Capitals side to get back in a post-season spot. The Edmonton Oilers will play a game of hockey. And the Avalanche can get a better grip on the spot they earned in last night’s game with a victory over the Los Angeles Kings. Should the Avs win that game in overtime, it brings some convoluted tie-breaking procedures into play to determine who ranks higher.
