Tomas Plekanec named to Czech Republic roster for World Cup of Hockey

Montreal Canadiens center Tomas Plekanec was unsurprisingly one of the players named to the first wave of skaters chosen for the Czech Republic for this summer’s World Cup of Hockey.

Teams will be making their initial selections throughout the day. Andrei Markov has already been selected for Team Russia. The other teams will have announcements throughout the day.

Plekanec leads all Canadiens forwards in scoring and is tied for third (behind David Krejci, Jakub Voracek and tied with Jaromir Jagr) among Czechs in the NHL this season. He has 12 goals and 34 assists in a year he has been widely criticized for his play despite putting up really good numbers.

Plekanec has won a silver medal at the 2006 World Championships, a bronze in 2011 and 2012 and represented the Czech Republic at the 2010 and 2014 Winter Olympics. He was the team’s captain in Sochi at the 2014 Games.
