The Habs claimed Paul Byron on waivers

NHL rosters have to be set by today, and therefore plenty of players were available on the waiver wire.

The Habs made one claim, forward Paul Byron, from the Calgary Flames.

Byron produced six goals and 13 assists in 57 games last season, playing alongside Mikael Backlund and Lance Bouma for 38% of his shifts, Markus Granlund and Johnny Gaudreau for almost 35% of his shifts.

Byron will provide depth for a squad that just lost the services of Zack Kassian. He comes with a $900,000 salary cap hit, and is an unrestricted free agent at the end of the year.

As it stands, the Canadiens already have 23 roster spots spoken for, therefore we might see a player like Jacob de la Rose make his way to the St. John’s IceCaps in the near future.

Matchsticks and Gasoline wrote a very interesting piece on Byron’s value, which is well worth a read.
