The Good Friday Massacre: Nordiques @ Canadiens – Game 6 – 1984

The deciding game in the second round series, and one of the most insane games in the history of the NHL. Four years removed from a Stanley Cup, the Montreal Canadiens looked to ride rookie goaltender Steve Penney to the promised land. But the Nordiques had other ideas.

Gone were the days of the high scoring Habs, with a 31 year old Guy Lafleur leading the Habs in scoring with just 70 points. New coach Jacques Lemaire had transformed the team into a defensive squad that worked hard and scraped out victories.

Young Swede Mats Naslund would lead the Canadiens in playoff scoring, with rookie defenseman Chris Chelios in second place. Here’s the entire Canadiens roster.

The Nordiques on the other hand, were all out offense, lead by the brothers Stastny, Michel Goulet, Wilf Paiement, and the reviled Dale Hunter. Here’s the entire Nordiques roster.
