The Dispatch: CSKA Moscow coach Igor Nikitin on Alexander Romanov’s future

CSKA Moscow has just beaten Dinamo Riga on the road 3-1. Quite a few players, goalkeeper Ilya Sorokin, the top scorer Kirill Kaprizov and, unfortunately Montreal Canadiens prospect Alexander Romanov were not in the lineup.

However after the press conference, Eyes on the Prize got a few words with the coach of CSKA Moscow. Igor Nikitin. Nikitin is a coach famous for being short and testy to reporters, but he shows a thoughtful and even humourous side when answering questions for The Dispatch about the defender that every Montreal fan craves updates on.

The short conversation centers around Alexander Romanov and his development, including a look on his defensive and offensive game, and how difficult it is to master a defensive position in the Red Army team from Moscow. The coach also says that he hopes Romanov’s future is with the Russian team.

“We hope his progress will be [with CSKA next year],” he said.

After the interview there are some conclusions from what Nikitin said, the complete opposite to what Marc Bergevin said in his press conference in Vancouver in regards to Romanov. It is clear that Montreal will face some competition from the Moscow team in signing the defender at the end of his current contract.
