IceCaps Player of the Week: Jacob de la Rose
After a slow start to the year, the Swedish forward is beginning to heat up, much like he did during his rookie season. With the IceCaps’ big guns struggling to score, the sophomore forward stepped up and registered a pair of goals against the Utica Comets this weekend.
Playing on the second line alongside Gabriel Dumont and Michael McCarron, de la Rose has been seeing heavy minutes, and getting regular time on the power play. He grabbed a goal on the man advantage in a 5-2 loss on Friday night, and then followed up by opening the scoring in the rematch the next day.

Bud Holloway: Even with the IceCaps offense sputtering over the weekend, the team’s leading scorer notched his 13th goal of the year in Friday’s 5-2 loss.
Charles Hudon: Another quiet series for the star forward, as he registered a lone assist in two games while playing alongside Nikita Scherbak and Bud Holloway.
Michael McCarron: There seems to be no end in sight for the rookie forward’s slump. McCarron has now gone 17 games without a goal and has been moved back to the wing. He did grab a single assist this week, but his lack of goals in hampering the team’s offence.
Daniel Carr: The scoring forward will be on the shelf for up to three months with a major knee injury.
Sven Andrighetto: After earning a recall to the NHL, the Swiss sniper has made a major impact playing with Lars Eller and Tomas Fleischmann on the third line. He has looked good in the last two games, and scored the shootout winner against the Carolina Hurricanes on Super Bowl Sunday.
Morgan Ellis: A career season continues for Ellis, who grabbed another assist and went over the 100 shots mark on the season.
Mark Barberio: The veteran blue-liner has been impressing in the NHL, earning the trust of Michel Therrien, and getting time at the expense of Nathan Beaulieu in recent games.
Mac Bennett: The former Michigan Wolverine did not see any games time this week.
Lucas Lessio: The speedy winger is nursing a lower body injury after a low hit by Radko Gudas.
Gabriel Dumont: The captain is well on his way to matching last year’s career season. He scored his 13th goal and notched an assist in a 3-2 overtime loss on Saturday.
Joel Hanley: The versatile blue-liner failed to record any points for the second straight week.
Brett Lernout: Despite solid defensive play, Lernout is finding it hard to score points and was without one in the two games.
Connor Crisp: Crisp is still out with an injury, having only seen action in 10 games so far in 2015-16.
Darren Dietz: The offensive-minded Dietz has been playing his best defensive hockey. Even without generating points, he’s been solid on the defensive side of the puck, and is one of Sylvain Lefebvre’s all-purpose players.
Nikita Scherbak: After the rookie forward had his best week of the season he was left as the top line center. The experiment however did not pay any dividends as Scherbak was held pointless and was a -4.
Jeremy Grégoire: Despite solid play in the first part of the season the rookie forward has been made a healthy scratch in favor of PTO signings.
Mark MacMillan: The former North Dakota standout was bumped up into the IceCaps’ top-nine. The tougher competition resulted in MacMillan failing to record a point.
Markus Eisenschmid: The rookie is once again on the IR after suffering an injury in the previous week.
Tim Bozon: Bozon was recalled from the Brampton Beast with the rash of injuries at forward, and he is still in search of his first AHL goal.
Michael Bournival: The veteran forward is on the shelf with an undisclosed injury.
Max Friberg: The young Swede continues to pay dividends for the IceCaps, especially on the power play. Friberg grabbed a pair of assists and is currently second on the team in assists, contributing six in 13 games since his acquisition.
Ryan Johnston: Johnston’s puck-moving style of play is a welcome addition to the St. John’s lineup and allows them to be more creative with the puck. After a long injury layoff, he has four assists in 10 games, registering one on Jacob de la Rose’s goal on Friday.
Zachary Fucale: The IceCaps netminder had the worst outing of his young career when he gave up three goals on four shots in less than five minutes in Friday’s 5-2 loss.

After a horrible January, the start of February was more of the same for St. John’s. The were blown out 5-2 by Utica on Friday, and let a late lead slip away in a 3-2 overtime loss the following night.

It’s a busy week coming up for the IceCaps, with four games on the schedule, all against divisional opponents. The Syracuse Crunch will be in town on the 8th and 9th, and the AHL’s hottest rivalry kicks off again when the Toronto Marlies visit on the 13th and 14th.
If the IceCaps want to keep their fading playoff hopes alive, they need several wins this week.
