IceCaps Player of the Week: Michael McCarron
After a long stretch without a goal, the behemoth rookie forward has started another hot streak. McCarron registered his 15th goal of the year in a game against the Syracuse Crunch, and also had the game-winning shootout goal to cap off an outstanding performance. He added an assist in a 2-1 loss to the Binghamton Senators, as well.
Perhaps more impressive than McCarron’s production was his ability to draw the attention of opposing players, opening up multiple chances for his linemates.
With 34 points, McCarron sits eighth overall in the AHL’s rookie scoring race; 10 points behind leader Mikko Rantanen.

Bud Holloway: It was a disappointing three games from an offensive perspective for the IceCaps’ leading goal-scorer, as he was held off the scoresheet. However, Holloway had what hasl likely been the biggest highlight of the season so far, as he dove across the goal mouth to prevent an empty-net goal in a 4-1 loss to the Senators.
Charles Hudon: The star forward, was not only held pointless, but suffered a lower-body injury in a 2-1 loss to Binghamton. Though he came back for the third period of that game, Hudon missed the IceCaps’ next game on Saturday.
Daniel Carr: The scoring forward will be on the shelf for up to three months with a major knee injury sustained on January 26.
Sven Andrighetto: The Swiss winger received a major promotion this past week in Montreal, moving up to the Montreal Canadiens‘ top line alongside Max Pacioretty and Lars Eller. He grabbed a single assist in a loss to the Colorado Avalanche before being moved down the lineup against Philadelphia.
Morgan Ellis: There is no stopping the goal-scoring force that is Morgan Ellis, who registered his 12th goal of the year in a 4-1 loss to Binghamton, Ellis now sits second in the league in goals by a defenceman.
Mark Barberio: The off-season acquisition finally got back into the Habs’ lineup on Monday night after sitting out the previous three games.
Mac Bennett: The former Michigan Wolverine was demoted to the ECHL’s Brampton Beast, where he has one assist in three games.
Lucas Lessio: The speedy winger finally returned to the Habs line up after suffering a lower-body injury. Though he failed to register a point, he was engaged physically and used his speed to create scoring chances for his linemates.
Gabriel Dumont: The captain was sidelined with an undisclosed injury, and his secondary scoring was missed by a struggling IceCaps offence.
Jacob de la Rose: The Swede had only one point, but it was a gorgeous no-look pass to set Dale Weise up for a goal against the Arizona Coyotes.
Joel Hanley: Much like previous reports, Hanley did not record any points for the IceCaps.
Victor Bartley: It was a quiet three games for the veteran defenceman, who registered just a secondary assist on a John Scott power-play goal. Bartley was recalled by the Canadiens to take the place of Tom Gilbert, who requires season-ending knee surgery.
Brett Lernout: The rookie blue-liner is having a tough time finding his offensive game in the AHL. His pugilistic ability remains intact, as he tangled with Syracuse captain Mike Angelidis in a spirited scrap on Wednesday.
Connor Crisp: Crisp is still out with an injury, having only seen action in 10 games so far in 2015-16.
Darren Dietz: It’s tough to explain why Dietz is struggling to produce points, his positional play and offensive skills have been great this season. Unfortunately, he’s still mired in a terrible slump, and there doesn’t appear to be any end in sight.
Nikita Scherbak: The Scherbak-at-centre experiment appears to have ended, if only due to all the injuries in the lineup. He was moved onto Michael McCarron’s wing for Saturday’s loss in Binghamton.
Jeremy Grégoire: The rookie forward is on the sideline with an injury.
Mark MacMillan: A run of great play continues for MacMillan, who has made his way into the IceCaps top six, and responded with a pair of assists.
Tim Bozon: The first-year forward is struggling consistency, and a shift to centre necessitated by the injury situation this past weekend did not help to break his scoring drought.
Michaël Bournival: The veteran forward is on the shelf with an undisclosed injury.
Max Friberg: The young Swede is becoming a major player for Sylvain Lefebvre, playing top-six minutes and getting time on the power play. Friberg had a single assist on the week on a Brandon McNally goal.
Ryan Johnston: After sparking the man advantage in the IceCaps three-game winning streak, Johnston was not a factor in this week’s games. He did not record any points, and the IceCaps power play was stagnant on the majority of their chances. Johnston was not in the lineup on Saturday, but it is unsure if it was an injury or if he was a healthy scratch.
John Scott: The reigning All-Star MVP, Scott scored his first goal as a member of the IceCaps organization; on the power play in a 4-3 win over the Syracuse Crunch.
Zach Fucale: After collecting AHL Player of the Week honours, the rookie netminder maintained his fantastic run of form. He led the way in a 4-3 win over Syracuse where he turned away 27 shots and all five shooters he faced in the shootout to grab the win. He followed that up with 22 saves in a 2-1 loss to Binghamton on Friday night.

After their best performance of the season last week, the IceCaps were unable to overcome the rash of injuries they’ve suffered. They dropped both games to division bottom-feeder Binghamton after a hard-fought win over the Syracuse Crunch.

The tour through central New York take the IceCaps to Albany,Utica, and back to Syracuse again this week. It’s going to be a tough series for St. John’s, especially if the injury situation does not improve.
