For the second time in four years, the NHL is adding a franchise to the league, bringing the divisional alignment to an even four groups of eight teams with the Seattle Kraken.

That means all the existing teams (minus the Vegas Golden Knights, who are exempt) have protected just a small group of players from their rosters and left a good amount of NHL regulars and promising prospects available. The Montreal Canadiens are no different, and the top player everyone is keeping their eyes and ears on is Carey Price, who agreed to waive a no-movement clause that would have guaranteed his protection slot, making him eligible to be claimed.

The official list of selections isn’t due to be released until tonight during a broadcast to announce each player, but news has been trickling out since the protection lists were submitted on Saturday about Seattle’s interest in and negotiations with several players. Members of the media will be poking and prodding all of their sources to get the latest details and try to piece together the Kraken’s plan before it’s all made official.
