The Montreal Canadiens opened their season with their annual golf tournament and Max Pacioretty was the main subject, just not in the way we expected 24 hours ago.
Marc Bergevin was the first one to talk, and the trade he made this morning was front and centre (no pun intended).
Marc Bergevin said the trade was contingent on Pacioretty signing long term with Vegas.

Marc Bergevin says that Pacioretty did indeed ask for a trade.

Bergevin wanted an ‘A’ prospect and had to push McPhee to trade Suzuki, repeating his ‘you need to give to get’ mentality.
Bergevin:”Notre objectif était d’avoir un espoir A. George (McPhee) n’était pas enclin à laisser partir Suzuki. Mais pour obtenir, tu dois donner.”

#Habs Bergevin says the key to the Pacioretty trade was acquiring, in their estimation, an “A” prospect. Mtl had Suzuki rated at 11th; VGK took him at 13 last year.
— John Lu (@JohnLuTSNMtl) September 10, 2018
#Habs Bergevin will not commit to saying Suzuki will be a centre, but says it would add depth if Suzuki can add to the mix with Kotkaniemi and Poehling at that position.

Geoff Molson came out and said that Pacioretty did ask for a trade as well.

Molson says that he trusts Bergevin to lead the Canadiens into the future.
Molson sans vouloir parler officiellement de reconstruction (retool or rebuild):”Pas de doute que Marc a fait des efforts pour rajeunir l’équipe et la rendre plus rapide.”
— Jonathan Bernier (@JBernierJDM) September 10, 2018
Molson also said it was “clear” Pacioretty wanted to leave Montreal.

#Habs Price greeted the media with a smile and comedic irony: “Heyyyy, what’s new?”
Like his teammates, Price expressed his gratitude for Pacioretty’s contributions to the team and community, but the deal didn’t come as a surprise to any of them.
