Friday Habs Headlines: Why P.K. Subban should be a member of Team Canada

Montreal Canadiens News and Notes

  • Four defensemen have been named to Team Canada’s roster for the 2016 World Cup of Hockey thus far, with the notable exclusion of P.K. Subban, who has a very real case for being one of the final players added. [SN]
  • While this has been a season worth forgetting, the Habs at least have a bright future to look forward to with Alex Galchenyuk and Michael McCarron giving cause to get excited. [Montreal Gazette]
  • In case you missed it, we’ve got you covered with all the highlights from Carey Price’s press conference yesterday in which he declared his confidence that he will return to action this season. [EOTP]
  • According to Arpon Basu, there may be no man capable of preventing Price from hitting the ice when he is back to full health, no matter the Habs’ situation. [TSN 690]
  • Price has, however, confirmed that he will not appear at the IIHF World Hockey Championship, with some pretty good reasoning:

  • More on Price, the Canadiens’ MVP had the chance to make all sorts of new friends as he was present for the Habs spring break camp. [Twitter]
  • As if we weren’t already impressed enough by Subban, he has shared the details behind his surprisingly “simple” workout regimen. [NY Times]
  • The St. John’s Ice Caps have signed forward Andrew Yogan to a pro tryout contract. Yogan has been dominating with the ECHLs’ Cincinnati Cyclones, and the Ice Caps could use the help at forward after losing Michael McCarron to the NHL club. [Ice Caps]

Around the League and Elsewhere

  • With many of the spots on Team Canada already chosen, there are still a few to hand out. Which Canadian NHLers should get the call? [SN]
  • While the Washington Capitals have been getting all the adulation in the Eastern conference, the Pittsburgh Penguins are once again a legitimate Stanley Cup contender. [TSN]
  • The New York Rangers are another top team in the East, though the blueshirts will be without the presence of Rick Nash for another two weeks or so as they get into the grind of the final stretch. [BSB]
  • Jim Nill, GM of the Dallas Stars, took a lot of flack from a lot of people for seemingly overpaying for blue-liner Kris Russell. Upon further consideration, however, maybe the trade wasn’t so bad. [DBD]
  • Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere has been having a ridiculously good rookie season – but has he been better than first overall pick Connor McDavid? [BSH]
  • With the playoffs drawing ever nearer, which teams are in, and who is out? Spoiler alert, things aren’t looking good for les Habitants. [Eye on Hockey]
  • Daniel Alfredsson has become a trusted member of the Ottawa Senators front office since his retirement, but there is an argument to be made that he should never become the team’s general manager. [SSS]
  • Boston Pride forward Denna Laing is continuing to receive support from the hockey community after her injury at the Winter Classic. [Twitter]
  • The US National Team Development Program has released their 2016 evaluation camp roster, which will include highly touted young stand-out Oliver Wahlstrom. [NTDP]
