Canadiens vs Senators third period thread

Things almost went from bad to worse for Andrei Markov after he misplayed the puck at the side of his own net, giving Mark Stone a wide open chance in front of the net where he was stopped by Carey Price. The nerves were raw the start the second period, with both teams keeping up with one another in terms of possession, but it was hard not to think the Habs were getting more nervous the longer they went without getting one past Andrew Hammond.

There was a lull in the Bell Center for the first half of the 2nd period. Torrey Mitchell brought life back to the crowd by wrapping in a puck on Hammond’s open side. 15 seconds later Tomas Plekanec scored to put the Habs up 2-1. Emotions exploded as the Habs took two violent penalties in a row first with Lars Eller taking a high-stick, then P.K. Subban was ejected from the game and given a 5 minute major penalty for slashing after he two-handed Mark Stone who hit the ice like his hand had been shot off. Kyle Turris would end up scoring after the Senators were able control the puck in the Habs zone for almost two minutes, scoring after the resulting 4 on 3 caused by the penalty to P.K. Subban. (Injury Report: Mark Stone returned to Sens bench minutes after the slash.) Lars Eller gave the Habs the lead back on a shorthanded breakaway. On the continuing Senators’ major powerplay, Mika Zibanejad would even the game up 3-3 on a rebound off of Carey Price’s chest at the side of the net. There was a detonation of 6 goals between 7:53 and 12:36 of the 2nd period.

P.K. Subban being out the remainder of the game eliminates one of the Habs most potent game-breakers. The call, whether good or bad, has already shaped the course of this game. Torrey Mitchell restored the Habs lead with his 2nd goal of the game by taking the puck to the slot and wrapping one past Andrew Hammond’s pad. Tonight, players picked up by Marc Bergevin at the trade deadline have factored into 3 of the 4 Habs’ goals.
