Canadiens vs. Red Wings third period thread

The Canadiens went nearly eight minutes between shots, finally forcing Petr Mrazek into a save on just their ninth shot attempt of the game, two minutes into the second period. With the forwards unable to generate any offense, Michel Therrien mixed up his lines, placing Sven Andrighetto on the fourth line and moving Dale Weise up to the first.

Sven Andrighetto drew a penalty (something that’s becoming his specialty) 5:37 into the period. The Habs generated a couple of quality scoring chances on the powerplay, but once again, were not quite sharp enough on their execution to put one home.

It seemed as though both teams were just waiting for the other to make a mistake, or for a bounce to go their way. The Wings pounced on a loose puck at the Canadiens’ blue line that Tom Gilbert tried to stop, but the puck leapt over his stick, over his head and suddenly Darren Helm was on a breakaway. He buried his shot top corner past Dustin Tokarski to put the Wings up 1-0.

When it seemed as though the Habs were without any way to spark themselves into life, Charles Hudon took a heavy shot as he came streaking down the wing that went through Petr Mrazek , leaving a rebound in the blue paint for Sven Andrighetto to put home for his fourth goal in nine games to tie the game 1-1.

Andrighetto’s goal woke up the Habs, and so the pace of the game picked up for the remainder of the second period. Moments after ‘Ghetto’s goal, Daniel Carr was sent off for a strange goalie interference penalty. On the ensuing Wing’s powerplay, Tomas Plekanec almost put the Habs up 2-1 on a breakaway chance, but was stoned on the backhand by Petr Mrazek. Tomas Plekanec would get another breakaway with under two minutes left in the period, but Mrazek stood his ground again to keep the game tied at one.

Dustin Tokarski has been very solid in this game, making several quality saves on Canadiens’ turnovers within their own zone, and 16 saves on 17 shots overall.
