Nathan Beaulieu returned to the lineup tonight, and jumped on a loose puck in front of the Senators‘ net left there by a solid power move towards the net by Daniel Carr. The puck went off Craig Anderson, and went to Brian Flynn on the far post who was wide open. Flynn made no mistake and put the Habs up 1-0 just 2:48 into the first period.
It was the exact start the Canadiens‘ needed. The Habs led 14-4 in shots by the midway point of the first period, and were owning possession with 19 shot attempts to Ottawa’s 5. By the end of the period, the Habs had extended their lead in shots on net to 27-8, and lead in possession by a margin of 37-12 shot attempts for.
On the Habs 26th shot of the period, Max Pacioretty fired home his 14th goal of the season on what was his 6th shot of the period. That was Pacioretty’s fifth goal in his last eight regular season games against the Senators.
The Habs have a 2-0 lead heading into the second, and will hopefully not take their foot off the gas for 40 more minutes.
