Mike Condon was a factor to start the game, making four stops on the eight shot attempts the Kings mustered in the first five minutes of the first period. The Habs only produced a mere two shot attempts in the same span. After spending the first six minutes on the defense, the Habs started to generate some chances with the fourth line creating chances and forcing Jonathan Quick to make a couple of good saves.
The Habs had suddenly leapt to a lead in shots on net at the ten-minute mark of the first period (7-5). The goalies were the story of the game so far, with both Condon and Quick stopping at least two or three quality scoring chances before the ten-minute mark.
David Desharnais took a penalty to potentially save a Kings’ goal. On the ensuing Kings powerplay, Lars Eller jumped on a loose puck and carried it down, powering his way to a breakaway but he rang it off the inside of the post. Eller drew a hooking penalty on the play, putting the Habs on the powerplay. The Canadiens moved the puck well, with P.K. Subban laying in off-speed shots from the point, but the powerplay could not convert again, and continues to decrease in efficiency.
It’s hard to criticize when the Habs are doing so many things right, except for putting the puck in the net. The Habs started out slow in this one, but by the end of the first led 18-7 in shots on net.
