The Habs fourth line woke up the Bell Centre 5:22 into the second period, with Devante Smith-Pelly pounding home his fourth goal of the season on a beautiful cross-crease pass from Torrey Mitchell.

The Habs held the Blue Jackets to just four shot attempts in the first ten minutes of the second period. They were in control of the second period when another defensive breakdown cost them. P.K. Subban held onto the puck too long behind his net trying to evade pressure and ended up giving it away. Two Blue Jackets players stood wide open in front of the net, including Brandon Dubinsky who wristed home his eleventh goal of the season.
The Canadiens had three consecutive chances on the powerplay, but didn’t make good on all three opportunities, including a couple of powerplays that went back to back. Also, Max Pacioretty left midway through the period after absorbing a shot from P.K. Subban and did not return making the prospect for a comeback that much more challenging in the third period.
