Paul Byron put the Habs up 2-0, burying a feed from Brian Flynn from the side of the net for his sixth goal of the year. The Habs went to the powerplay moments later, with Kevan Miller sent off for cross-checking Dale Weise, but were unable to convert any goals from the on shot attempts and two shots on net the powerplay created.
Lars Eller was assessed a hooking penalty at the 6:43 mark, giving the Bruins an opportunity to reduce the lead and put some shots on the board. The Bruins had four shots on net, but couldn’t beat Condon. Two minutes after the Bruins’ powerplay expired, Nathan Beaulieu was sent off for holding, but again the Canadiens defended the Bruins powerplay and maintained their 2-0 lead.
Brendan Gallagher lifted the Canadiens to a 3-0 lead, batting a floating pass to the slot past Tuuka Rask for his tenth goal of the season. This was the third of four lines to score for the Habs in the game, with only Alex Galchenyulk’s line yet to register a goal in the game.
The Habs had to defend three powerplays in the second period, allowing the Bruins to have a slight advantage in possession, but they outplayed the Bruins five-on-five, and Mike Condon was solid, stopping fourteen shots in the second period.
The Canadiens will defend a 3-0 lead heading into the third period. Some bad news, in that Dale Weise is out for the remainder of the game after taking a cross check from Kevan Miller in the second period.
