The Montreal Canadiens have signed goaltender Samuel Montembeault to a three year contract extension with a cap hit of $3.15 million, the team announced on Friday.

The contract should put to rest any discussion of the Canadiens trading the goaltender, as there have been many whispers about the Edmonton Oilers being interested in the team’s goaltenders. Montembeault is seemingly off that list with the new extension.

The 27-year-old Bécancour, Quebec native was set to be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season. In 10 games this season, he has a 5-3-1 record with a 2.73 goals against average and .910 save percentage. He also won a gold medal with Canada at the last IIHF World Championships.

Montembeault was acquired off waivers when the Canadiens claimed him prior to the 2021-22 season starting, and he has developed into a reliable NHL goaltender. With more certainty surrounding Montembeault, it will be interesting whether this has a ripple effect with the Canadiens having kept three goaltenders on the roster all season thus far.
