The Montreal Canadiens have signed goaltender Samuel Montembeault to a three year contract extension with a cap hit of $3.15 million, the team announced on Friday.
The 27-year-old Bécancour, Quebec native was set to be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season. In 10 games this season, he has a 5-3-1 record with a 2.73 goals against average and .910 save percentage. He also won a gold medal with Canada at the last IIHF World Championships.
Montembeault was acquired off waivers when the Canadiens claimed him prior to the 2021-22 season starting, and he has developed into a reliable NHL goaltender. With more certainty surrounding Montembeault, it will be interesting whether this has a ripple effect with the Canadiens having kept three goaltenders on the roster all season thus far.
