Montreal Canadiens sign Otto Leskinen to two-year entry-level contract

The Montreal Canadiens have signed defenceman Otto Leskinen to a two-year entry-level contract.

Leskinen is 22 years old and participated in the team’s development camp last season. He played with KalPa in Liiga the last three seasons and has 11 goals and 44 assists in 178 career games. Last season he played 57 games and had eight goals and 23 assists, his most successful season to date. He led the team’s defenders in goals and assists.

He will provide depth to the organization and is a left-handed shot, a spot the organization has needed some depth the last few seasons. He won’t necessarily be in the NHL conversation right away, but has some familiarity with the team due to development camp last year. At 22 years old, he can be seen as a prospect and a wild card.

Of course, he should feel familiar in the Canadiens organization with the amount of Finns. The Canadiens organization would have seen a lot of Leskinen since he plays on the same team that Habs prospect Joni Ikonen plays on.
