The Montreal Canadiens have signed goaltender Michael McNiven to a contract extension.

McNiven’s contract will be a one-year, two-way contract for the 2020-21 season. It will pay him $700,000 in the NHL and $75,000 in the AHL.
The goaltender split last season between the AHL and the ECHL until he was recalled to be a part of the team’s Return to Play camp. With the Laval Rocket, he was 3-0-0 with a 2.33 goals against average and .919 save percentage. With Keith Kinkaid sent to another team, and Charlie Lindgren in the NHL he became Cayden Primeau’s backup in Laval.
The goaltender shuffle will not be much different next season as it stands. With Carey Price and Jake Allen in the NHL, Charlie Lindgren, McNiven, and Vasili Demchenko will be in the mix for the Rocket. However, unlike previous years, since this is not McNiven’s entry-level contract, the team will need his permission to send him to the ECHL.
McNiven was set to be a restricted free agent on October 9, and will be one at the end of the 2020-21 season.
