Montreal Canadiens sign Alex Belzile to a new contract

The Montreal Canadiens have re-signed forward Alex Belzile to a one-year, two-way contract for the 2020-21 season.

The contract is for $750,000 at the NHL level and $225,000 at the AHL level with a minimum guaranteed value of $250,000.

Belzile is coming off a year of highs and, more often lows. The veteran entered the season with his first NHL contract, and played well in the pre-season before heading back to the Laval Rocket where he led the team in scoring in 2018-19. This year, he had seven goals and seven assists in 14 games but his season ended on December 4 when he suffered an injury.

He underwent pectoral surgery that ended his season. If not for the injury, given the injury issues in Montreal this season, it’s not out of the question that he would have made his NHL debut. He will likely be at the top of any call up options next season as well and if he does play in Laval, he would be a big part of the leadership core there.
