Montreal Canadiens release reverse retro jersey

For the first time since very early in their history, the Montreal Canadiens will have a jersey that is primarily blue. The reverse retro jersey was announced Thursday along with the 30 other NHL teams.

Geoff Molson has hinted at a third jersey recently, and it’s possible the team may have something else up its sleeve, but this is a significant change from their regular jerseys as well as Winter Classic and NHL100 Classic jerseys they have had in the past which were white as they were the road team.

The last time the Canadiens wore a primary blue jersey was during their Centennial season celebrations. It was a replica of their first jersey from the 1909-10 NHA Canadiens jersey, and worn for the game on November 21, 2009.

Admittedly it is strange sight to see the Canadiens in blue, but the colour has been part of their uniform from the first game in their history, and remains a secondary colour to this day.

This is the only time the team has an official third jersey (that is not for a one-off event) besides the 2006-07 season.
