The Canadiens last played a game on Monday, an overtime win over the Toronto Maple Leafs, before making a trip to Mont-Tremblant for some team bonding. The club has hit the road for one more tuneup contest before the regular season begins on Wednesday, and it’s Kanata they’ve arrive in to take on the Ottawa Senators.

Montreal cut its roster down relatively early in training camp, so they don’t have many more options than what the official roster will be for that opening game. But the Ottawa Senators have decided to rest their stars for this pre-season finale, and will dress a few of the players who recently cleared waivers. They want one last look at some of their players in an NHL environment, and the Canadiens will oblige.

Tanner Pearson, Josh Anderson, and Brendan Gallagher are the forwards held out of the lineup this evening, while Kaiden Guhle, David Savard, and Johnny Kovacevic get the night off on the back end. That means one more look at Mattias Norlinder before the roster has to be set, and he’s playing alongside Justin Barron, who may be the player Norlinder is competing against for a place on the 23-man formation. Norlinder has looked very good in the pre-season so far, and one of the few players who looks like a threat to create a goal on the power play, which may ultimately be the deciding factor in this battle.
