Montreal Canadiens notes from practice: January 5

The Montreal Canadiens power play has been an achilles heel for the team for the past few seasons, and with heightened expectations and a lot of time to think about it, it appears there’s a new look to start the season.

With Jeff Petry and Shea Weber both on the first power play unit, it appears that the team is finally committing to putting Weber in the “Ovechkin” shooting position on the left-side half wall.

Alexander Romanov and Victor Mete rotated in on the second unit. Since Mete is not in the regular rotation for defence pairs, it appears that the rookie defenceman has the inside track to be the defenceman on the second unit.

Nick Suzuki and Jesperi Kotkaniemi appear to be the playmakers on the right side wall, and Corey Perry and Tyler Toffoli will be used as a net-front presence.

Perry is out of quarantine and making his debut at Canadiens practice on the second day of on-ice work.

Because of Perry’s arrival, Jordan Weal was moved to Group B, which practices later in the day. Perry skated with Ryan Poehling and Michael Frolik.
