Bottom Six Minutes: Highlights from Canadiens development camp scrimmages

Two separate 25-minute scrimmages were held yesterday at development camp for the Montreal Canadiens, giving fans a glimpse at some of the players in the system. You don’t want to read too much into a pair of summer scrimmages, but there were some interesting performances from future Habs.

For starters, Adam Engström was arguably the most impressive player on the ice.

He was constantly looking to create offensively, and stifling the opposition in transition. He had an incredible set up for the first goal of the day, a fake slapshot pass over to Jack Smith that fooled everyone on the ice, and even seemed to surprise the recipient himself.

Engström is still under contract with Rögle BK in the SHL for the upcoming season, so barring something out of the ordinary, he’ll be back in Sweden. Still, he definitely provided a glimpse of what he can do against the other prospects in the system, and

Perhaps the most encouraging development of the day, however, was the chemistry between Lane Hutson and fifth-overall pick David Reinbacher. The pair were just clicking out there, with Hutson managing to find a streaking Reinbacher coming down from the point on multiple occasions.

Neither is expected to be playing for the Montreal Canadiens this season, but for them to establish chemistry together that quickly is exciting for Habs fans nonetheless. If they can work this well together now, we can only imagine what they’ll look like when they’re both ready.

Reinbacher went as far as to say he sees Hutson as “the next Cale Makar,” which is some incredibly high praise. They clearly enjoy playing together, and if the organization sees fit, they could get a chance to do so professionally a few years down the road.

Elsewhere, Luke Tuch scored an absolute screamer.

Filip Mesar had one such goal of his own.

And it was Joshua Roy and Logan Mailloux with the most impressive goals in the shootout at the end of the action.

This is the closest we’ll get to Habs hockey for a little while, and it was nice to see some encouraging performances from the prospects.
