The Montreal Canadiens have acquired Tanner Pearson and a third round pick from the Vancouver Canucks in return for goaltender Casey DeSmith.

Pearson was just activated off of long-term injured reserve today by the Canucks, likely because of this trade. He is in the final year of a contract that has a cap hit of $3.25 million.

The draft pick acquired from the Canucks is a 2025 third round pick.

The 31-year-old played in only 14 games last season, scoring one goal and adding four assists. In 590 career NHL games, he has 133 goals and 139 assists for 272 points. He won a Stanley Cup with the Los Angeles Kings.

DeSmith was acquired in the Mike Hoffman trade that also saw Jeff Petry briefly back in Montreal. The expectation was that he would be traded before the season started, and that is exactly what has happened. The Canadiens get a draft pick for their trouble.

This also gets the Canadiens closer to the upper limit of their LTIR cap, with Carey Price to be placed before the season starts.
