The Montreal Canadiens have acquired forward Filip Cederqvist from the Buffalo Sabres for future considerations, the team announced on Thursday.

Cederqvist is 23-years-old and 6’3″, 203 lbs. He was drafted in the fifth-round in 2019 (143rd overall). He is currently with the Rochester Americans and will be assigned to the Laval Rocket. He has one goal and three assists in 19 AHL games this season. Last year he had nine goals and 11 assists in 55 games in the AHL. He is in his second AHL season. He also played pro hockey in Sweden in the AllSvenskan and SHL before coming to North America.

Cederqvist is a restricted free agent at the end of the season.

The Canadiens, and more specifically the Rocket, needed forward depth with the news that Gabriel Bourque, Sean Farrell, and Nathan Légaré would all be out weeks. They recently called up two forwards from the Trois-Rivières Lions as well. They also had an additional contract slot after Gustav Lindström was claimed off waivers on Wednesday.

The Rocket may be getting some additional help as Rafaël Harvey-Pinard will take Emil Heineman’s spot in the lineup for Thursday’s game against the San Jose Sharks.

In a separate move, the Laval Rocket traded D Noah Laaouan to the Rochester Americans for D Chris Jandric. Laaouan was in the ECHL with the Lions and Jandric will report to the Lions.
