Montreal Canadiens sign 2016 first-round draft selection Mikhail Sergachev to a three-year entry-level contact

The Montreal Canadiens added a talented defenceman to the system with the ninth-overall selection at the 2016 NHL Entry Draft, and today they signed Mikhail Sergachev to his first NHL contract.

Amassing 57 points with the Windsor Spitfires in 2015-16, he’ll likely reprise his role as the OHL team’s top defender in the upcoming season, though he has designs on making the Habs out of training camp.

Sergachev is the most promising defensive prospect the Canadiens own the rights to, and today they officially added him to their organizational system. After just turning 18 on June 25, Sergachev has a few more years of junior eligibility remaining, though the Canadiens may not wait for him to play them all out before giving him a look at the NHL level.
