2023 NHL Draft: Montreal Canadiens select Luke Mittelstadt with pick 197

The Montreal Canadiens have used their last pick of the 2023 NHL Draft to select Luke Mittelstadt.

Luke is the brother of Buffalo Sabres forward Casey Mittelstadt. A defenceman for the University of Minnesota, Luke was playing his first year in the NCAA in 2022-23 season. The 20-year-old had 21 points in 38 games on a very good team filled with NHL-drafted prospects, chief among them 2022 selection Logan Cooley.

Mittlstadt is on the smaller side for a defenceman at 5’11” and 176 pounds, which is why he’s a seventh-round pick in his third year of eligibility. He will probably finish the remaining years of his college career before he decides to turn professional, giving the Canadiens time to evaluate his progress before making the decision to offer him a contract.
