Bottom Six Minutes: Joshua Roy wants a roster spot

The Montreal Canadiens kicked off their pre-season on Monday night, losing 4-2 to the New Jersey Devils. Largely outshot and out-chanced in the game, it wasn’t one that inspired much confidence in a Habs resurgence this season. Of course, in the wise words of Carey price; chill out, it’s pre-season.

But there was no chill for Joshua Roy, who performed like a player intent on making the NHL roster.

This power play goal was eerily reminiscent of what he used to do at times in junior, lurking in the offensive zone until he’s lost in coverage, and then cashing in on an opportunity. But it wasn’t just the goal that inspired belief in him earning a roster spot, he was arguably the best forward on his team.

His forechecking was relentless, he played well in the defensive zone, and his line with Owen Beck and Jesse Ylonen was perhaps the most threatening trio the Habs had to offer on the night. Roy’s two-way game and compete level are sure to win over his coaches, and if he can continue bringing this level of effort in all of his pre-season opportunities, it isn’t out of the question that he could start the season in Montreal.

Of course, you can’t read too much into one pre-season game, but everyone from the broadcast team to the fans on twitter were in agreement on just how good he looked. At the very least, the odds of him seizing a roster spot have improved drastically due to his performance in this game, and at camp in general.

Elsewhere in the lineup, Logan Mailloux turned some heads with his physicality and skating abilities.

It wasn’t a perfect outing for Mailloux, but encouraging to say the least. In particular, he appeared more reserved in his ventures up ice, playing well off his teammates instead of trying to do too much on his own. His tool box is one that few players have, and if he puts everything together, he could be a very interesting option for the Habs before long.
