Joni Ikonen out six months with leg injury

After having returned at the end of the Liiga season where Montreal Canadiens prospect Joni Ikonen played 13 games and scored 10 (5G-5A) points, he was looking forward to the new season with KalPa.

He had put in a lot of work over the summer, including a long workout session in Montreal, Ikonen injured his leg during the last preseason game. The verdict from the doctors are in and the Finnish centre is looking at approximately six months of recovery time before he can return to the ice.

Eyes on the Prize spoke with Joni Ikonen earlier this week and Ikonen said “[You] will know more when the examination was complete and when KalPa wants to release the news.”

Ikonen was drafted by Montreal Canadiens in the second round in the 2017 draft and since his return to Finland he has struggled with two major injuries. His return was hailed as a success story and one of the things that Montreal Canadiens fans were excited about last year, and Ikonen was tied at 20th in this years Top 25 Under 25.

An earlier version of this article said Ikonen was out 10-12 weeks. This was misinterpreted. He is out until approximately March, 2020 (weeks 10-12 of 2020).
