Injury update: Brendan Gallagher, Smith-Pelly Nikita Scherbak, Jacob de la Rose

Guillaume LeFrançois of La Presse posted an article on Monday morning updating the status of Nikita Scherbak and Jacob de la Rose, both sidelined with injuries with the American Hockey League’s St. John’s IceCaps. It was a welcome update, because it shed a light on the status of these two top Montreal Canadiens prospects.

The concern with Scherbak was that he sustained a concussion after a brutal hit by Toronto Marlies defenceman Viktor Loov on November 13th. But the injury has been clarified as a re-occuring ankle injury that has followed Scherbak since training camp. The team has decided to shut him down until he is fully healed, which is currently estimated at January.

In the case of Jacob de la Rose, it’s apparently a knee injury that has kept him out of the IceCaps line-up for the past ten games. He is expected to return before the Christmas break.

Both players had a challenging start to the season, so a return to full health would be very welcome for their continued development. With the injury bug hitting both the Canadiens and IceCaps so far this season, it is nice to at least see the light at the end of the tunnel for some returning healthy bodies.

As for Brendan Gallagher, the injured forward underwent successful surgery to repair the damage in his hand. The operation took up to 5 hours according to Gallagher, and he’s now in the recovery process.

He still hasn’t ruled out an appearance at the Winter Classic, although at this point a return on New Year’s day seems unlikely.

In other news, Devante Smith-Pelly has been added to the injured reserve
