IceCaps Players of the Week: Tim Bozon
Purely thanks to the fact that Bozon was the only IceCaps player to register a point, he takes home player of the week honors. It’s been a rough season for everyone in the organization, in particular Bozon, who spent some time in the ECHL after struggling to start the year.
After a long battle with meningitis and the recovery afterwards, it’s hard to be critical of his rookie season. His tools are all there, and it seems only a matter of getting a bit more luck. His goal this week was outstanding, as he collected the puck off a faceoff scramble and wired it into the top corner of the net.

A career year for the veteran players
Despite long stretches of diminished offensive production, several IceCaps veterans posted career highs offensively. Gabriel Dumont had a very cold start to the year, and then ended up setting a career high of 45 points. With four games left, he could very well achieve 20 goals and 50 points.
After spending several forgettable seasons with the Bulldogs and being demoted to the ECHL, Morgan Ellis has evolved into a production machine on the blueline this year. He currently ranks second in the AHL for goals by a defenceman, and is in the top 20 for overall scoring on defence as well.
Charles Hudon: Wunderkind
I’ve run out of ways to describe how good Hudon has been this year in the AHL. He set a new career high in goals, and spent much of the year working with a rotating cast of linemates. Every night he’s arguably the most dangerous man on the ice, and creates plays out of nothing. He also helped spark the second half resurgence of rookie Nikita Scherbak, who had a horrid start to his AHL career due to injuries.
In the previous week, the duo combined for four goals and six assists while playing together and were the most dominant pair in the AHL. Even in his short NHL stint, he recorded two points before being unceremoniously scratched by Michel Therrien.
Injuries and Call-ups galore
The start of this season saw the IceCaps boasting arguably the deepest forward group in the AHL, so much so that players like Nikita Scherbak and Jacob de la Rose were in the bottom-six. A top-six including Bud Holloway, Hudon, Daniel Carr, Sven Andrighetto, and Michael McCarron dominated the scoresheet.
Then the injuries started piling up in the NHL, the IceCaps lost all but Hudon and Holloway, and the offence dried up. To make matters worse, the mass of injuries to the Canadiens back-end took nearly the entire IceCaps defensive corps away, leaving them with Morgan Ellis and rookie Josiah Didier.
It’s another year of no post-season hockey
Sylvain Lefebvre has been at the helm of the Habs’ farm club for four years, and in that time they haven’t come close to making the playoffs. If the franchise’s motto really is “no excuses,” there really is none for an AHL club with the talent they have missing the playoffs every year. It’s time to wipe the slate clean and bring in an up and coming coach to help develop the AHL prospects.

The IceCaps season is going out with a whimper it seems. With their playoff hopes hanging on by a thread, they scored only one goal while giving up thirteen. These performances put the final nails in the coffin regarding their playoff hopes.

Not much action remains ahead for the IceCaps, as they will next play a two game series against the Utica Comets starting on Saturday, April 9. They’ll be getting Michael McCarron and Jacob de la Rose back from Montreal, but their remaining games are for pride alone at this point. Here’s hoping they have some fight left in them.
