Following a tightly contested loss on Saturday to the Springfield Thunderbirds, the IceCaps started their month long road trip in Binghamton. Despite the loss to Springfield, Charlie Lindgren got the nod for St. John’s, while in the opposing net was Matt O’Connor.
While the previous game was a slow paced, defensive duel, things would kick off fast and early in this contest. David Broll put the IceCaps on the board less than five minutes into the game with his second goal of the year. Thirty second later, Guillaume Lepine picked the top corner behind Lindgren to tie the game up for Binghamton. The IceCaps lethal power play would take the lead back however, with Chris Terry rocketing a shot past O’Connor. The goal ties Terry for the team lead, and adds to his lead in power play goals for the IceCaps.

Offense was the focus in the first period, but the second was all about the goalies. Particularly Lindgren, who made sixteen saves in the middle frame, although Phil Varone managed to sneak a puck past the netminder to tie the game. Without his strong showing the in the period the IceCaps could be facing a multi goal deficit. Perhaps no save was as nice as his glove save, taking away a goal from Varone in close.

Roughly half way through the third period the Senators finally broke through when Buddy Robinson got one past Lindgren giving his team a 3-2 lead. The strong play of the IceCaps netminder kept his team competitive while the Senators piled up the shots. With the man advantage late in the period, Sven Andrighetto converted a Chris Terry pass into a game tying goal.

Overtime would be a one sided affair. The Senators tested Lindgren on multiple occasions including a Jason Akeson breakaway, and finally a goal mouth scramble led to a loose puck which Max McCorrmick slotted behind a sprawled out Lindgren.
Lindgren made thirty-seven saves in the loss, with St. John’s surrendering forty-one total shots on net. Once again the offense sputtered a little, testing Matt O’Connor with a meager twenty shots throughout the game. Also of note was Charles Hudon and Chris Terry colliding late in the third period. Hudon was helped off the ice, but returned for the overtime period.
St. John’s continues their New York swing, with a stop in Utica on Friday night, and then spend Saturday in Rochester against the Amerks. The IceCaps are 4th in the North Division, with a 13-12-2 record.
