IceCaps vs Senators Recap: Fucale Flawless in crucial win

Much like the previous nights game against Albany, there wasn’t much action in the first period. Zach Fucale turned away all seven shots he faced, including a penalty kill situation. His opponent Marcus Hogberg stopped all eight IceCaps shots, however a late penalty by Max McCormick would prove to be an issue carrying over into the second frame. St. John’s would make the most of it.

Zach Redmond found Chris Terry who ripped a hard shot on net, but it would be Jacob de la Rose cleaning up a rebound who got the goal. It was the 13th goal of the year for de la Rose, who continues to be red hot in the second half of this season.

The Swede wasn’t the only IceCap to make the highlight reel in the middle period, as Zach Fucale was called on to make a massive save on a shorthanded chance. A Senators player broke in alone and a sprawling Fucale denied him to keep the IceCaps in the lead.

The final period started much like the second one, with an early IceCaps power play paying off. With Macoy Erkamps sitting for high sticking Zach Redmond tallied a power play goal.

The IceCaps weren’t done with scoring yet, this time Anthony Camara would be the catalyst for the goal. The IceCaps fourth liner used his speed to get around a Binghamton defender and set up the newest IceCap, Niki Petti, for a goal.

Despite the game being pretty much in hand Bobby Farnham and Stefan Matteau would pile on another two goals in the final 90 seconds to truly seal the deal.

Daniel Audette fed a perfect pass to Farnham who was driving to the net and it ended up as Farnham’s 11th goal of the year.

With just six seconds left Stefan Matteau bolted into the zone, sped around the net and finished off a dominant IceCaps win with a fantastic wraparound goal. Zach Fucale earned the victory in net, posting a 24 save shutout in his first AHL start since the beginning of the season.

After a heat breaking loss in Albany the previous night, this was a strong bounce back performance against a team the IceCaps have struggled to beat this season. Factor in Utica being manhandled by Rochester, and tomorrow’s matchup in Utica becomes that much more important.
