Thursday Habs Links: The future is looking very bright

Montreal Canadiens Links

  • The Montreal Canadiens prospect pool was an absolute mess 10 years ago, but today many NHL analysts would rank the Habs as having one of the best in the NHL. [Hockey’s Future]
  • Carey Price played hero again on Tuesday night, backstopping the Habs to a 2-1, 37 save shootout victory and ending their seven-game losing streak in Calgary against the Flames. Price started off the season looking a little shaky, but has been playing like a Vezina candidate for the last two weeks. [Canadiens]
  • Carey Price is the talk of the Montreal Canadiens world right now. Nobody can help but wonder “what if” when it comes to thinking about the Eastern Conference Finals last year. Eric Engels gives us his thoughts. [Hockey Buzz]
  • Coach Michel Therrien and head coach of the Calgary Flames, Bob Hartley, have a very good relationship that dates back to their days as fisherman. Wait what? Yes, that’s right, their relationship was really formed on a fishing boat a long long time ago. [Montreal Gazette]
  • Things might start getting a little frustrating in the Montreal locker room. Lars Eller was benched on Tuesday night against the Calgary Flames for the Habs poor play. [EOTP]

Around the League

  • Boston Bruins defenseman Torey Krug will be out of the lineup for 2-4 weeks with a broken finger. With Zdeno Chara already out for 4-6 weeks, the Bruins powerplay might be a little weak for the next month. [Boston Herald]
  • 86-year old hockey legend, Gordie “Mr. Hockey” Howe, has suffered a severe stroke and is now resting at his daughter’s house in Texas. The Hall of Famer and former NHL all-time points and goals leader has been in ill health for the better part of a year now. [Detroit Free Press]
  • Washington Capitals center Nicklas Backstrom has been putting up huge numbers under the radar this year just like he does every year. Largely overshadowed by his superstar winger Alex Ovechkin since 2006, Backstrom has put up 494 points in 494 career NHL games to give him an exact point-per-game pace. Things look to be no different in Washington this year for Backstrom. [NHL]
  • If you look at the history of goalies in the NHL, most of them, you will find, are pretty average size. Goalie legends Rogie Vachon, Bernie Parent, and George Hainsworth, to name a few, were all under 5′ 10″, but they are all in the Hall of Fame and were considered the greatest goalies of their generation. Today, however, it is very rare to see a starting NHL goaltender under six feet so I guess size really does matter. [TSN]
  • Here is what the Boston Bruins had to say about their horrible let down loss against the Minnesota Wild on Tuesday night. The B’s were up 3-1 in the third period and lost 4-3 in regulation. [Stanley Cup of Chowder]
