86-year old hockey legend, Gordie “Mr. Hockey” Howe, has suffered a severe stroke and is now resting at his daughter’s house in Texas. The Hall of Famer and former NHL all-time points and goals leader has been in ill health for the better part of a year now. [Detroit Free Press]
Washington Capitals center Nicklas Backstrom has been putting up huge numbers under the radar this year just like he does every year. Largely overshadowed by his superstar winger Alex Ovechkin since 2006, Backstrom has put up 494 points in 494 career NHL games to give him an exact point-per-game pace. Things look to be no different in Washington this year for Backstrom. [NHL]
If you look at the history of goalies in the NHL, most of them, you will find, are pretty average size. Goalie legends Rogie Vachon, Bernie Parent, and George Hainsworth, to name a few, were all under 5′ 10″, but they are all in the Hall of Fame and were considered the greatest goalies of their generation. Today, however, it is very rare to see a starting NHL goaltender under six feet so I guess size really does matter. [TSN]
