Before he was able to swing some clubs at the annual Montreal Canadiens charity golf tournament on Thursday, team General Manager Marc Bergevin made himself available to the throng of press attending the event, and answered a lingering question by announcing that the team will in fact name a new captain prior to the start of the season. This will be the first player to hold that role since the departure of Brian Gionta after the 2013-2014 season. Four players were alternate captains during the previous season: PK Subban, Max Pacioretty, Andrei Markov, and Tomas Plekanec and it is safe to speculate that one of them will wear the C going forward. If popular opinion is to be believed, then Max Pacioretty is favoured to be named the 29th captain in team history.
