It was announced this morning by the Montreal Canadiens that goaltender Dustin Tokarski has signed a two year extension with the club, through 2016.
Tokarski was acquired in a trade with the Tampa Bay Lightning last year, in exchange for Cedric Desjardins.
Tokarski saw limited action with the Canadiens this year, although it’s worth noting that her performed admirably when called upon. His season with the struggling Bulldogs has been excellent, considering their defense has been gutted all year long.
Tokarski’s save percentage of .920 during 40 games with the Bulldogs is far and away the best numbers we’ve seen from any goalie in Hamilton. Dubnyk managed a .893 save % in 9 games, whereas Robert Mayer has produced a .905 save percentage in 27 games.
Tokarski might even challenge for the back-up spot next year, seeing as Montreal will likely have to shed some salary to re-sign both Markov, Subban and hopefully Thomas Vanek.
Keep in mind that Peter Budaj is signed through the 2015 season. If the Habs don’t move him expect Tokarski to begin the season in Hamilton and share some of his starts with Robert Mayer. We should also keep an eye on Mike Condon, who has been dominating the ECHL with the Wheeling Nailers.
