Montreal Canadiens defenceman David Schlemko clears waivers

David Schlemko has cleared waivers, and as such was be assigned to the Laval Rocket of the AHL.

Schlemko has played 18 games this season, registering two assists. He has played 45 games with the Canadiens over the last two seasons, scoring one goal and adding six assists. He was acquired before last season from the Vegas Golden Knights for a 2019 fifth-round pick. He has played 415 career NHL games over parts of 10 seasons. He has 18 goals and 76 assists in his career.

The organization’s defensive depth has been tested with the departure of Simon Després from the Laval Rocket, and an injury to Noah Juulsen and a scare in Monday’s game with Shea Weber. Schlemko will join Xavier Ouellet with the Rocket after clearing waivers and like Karl Alzner, he may make his way back to the NHL depending on what happens going forward.

It’s possible that he could be more attractive to teams as he can be traded and then assigned directly to the AHL.
