Danny Kristo will not sign with Montreal this off-season
Breaking news from the twitter-verse and confirmed by the University of North Dakota
The Montreal Canadiens' 2008 2nd round draft pick, and NCAA junior year prospect, Danny Kristo has announced that he is returning for his final year with the North Dakota Fighting Sioux.
Kristo is coming off a strong campaign with career highs in goals (19) and points (45) in 42 games. Fifteen of those games saw him score at least two points. Many had expected that the 21-year-old right winger was ready to take the next step by turning pro and starting his career with the Hamilton Bulldogs next season.
Returning to play a final college year, and completing his education, will mean that Kristo will be in a position to be an unrestricted free agent next August, if he chooses to not sign with Montreal. It significantly improves his leverage against the team and creates a potential scenario where Kristo can choose his own NHL team. Justin Schultz, who just completed his third year with the Wisconsin Badgers, has the opportunity to do just that if the Anaheim Ducks do not sign him by June 1.
