Charlie Lindgren’s Highlights of the Year: Desperation dive in overtime

Charlie Lindgren had a tough season for the Laval Rocket and Montreal Canadiens, but he did have a knack of making some amazing saves. He and Petr Mrazek of the Philadelphia Flyers had the rare double shutout hours after the NHL’s Trade Deadline on February 26 at the Bell Centre.

The Flyers had Claude Giroux, Shayne Gostisbehere, and Jakub Voracek on the ice in overtime, and they had their cycle going. Voracek got the puck to Gostisbehere who went around the net and found Giroux alone in front. Giroux had a wide open net, but Lindgren dove across and kept the puck out with just over 20 seconds remaining.

It’s not often that you get a save like this in overtime when, very clearly, the next goal would win. Lindgren made 33 saves in this one, including five saves in overtime.

The game ended up going to a shootout, and the Flyers finally did end up getting the extra point.

The 1-0 shootout game is rare, and happened only two times last season. Since the shootout was implemented in 2005-06, it happened only 43 times. Ironically, Montreal was involved two of the last three times.
