The Penguins came out a much different team to start the 2nd period, generating 10 shot attempts before the 5 minute mark of the period and scoring on their 10th attempt when Beau Bennet streaked in on a 2 on 1 and beat Carey Price on the far blocker side. By the first commercial break with 12:14 left in the 2nd period, the Penguins had created 13 shot attempts to the Canadiens 4 and erased all the good work the Habs had done in the first period.
Luckily, the Habs powerplay would work exactly when they needed it to. The Canadiens would end up with a powerplay when the game resumed, as the Penguins had been called for Too Many Men before the commercial break, and Max Pacioretty took charge of the lulling, mindless passing his powerplay unit was engaged in and lasered the puck through Marc-Andre Fleury from inside the faceoff circle. The 2-1 lead would not last for long as Kris Letang would score 1:24 later on a knuckling wrist shot that floated more like a UFO than a puck shot by an NHL player. At this point it the period, the Penguins had landed 11 shots on net to the Canadiens’ 5, and took the shot lead despite only having 4 in the first period.
The Canadiens would build their way back into the game after a series of shifts from the top two lines, reducing to CF differential to 34-33 in favour of the Penguins by the end of the 2nd period.
