Canadiens vs Avalanche Top Six Minutes: Another day, another loss

For our new readers and members, the Top Six Minutes is a continuation of the discussion in the game thread. We try to keep it light and entertaining. Full recaps are up the morning after every game.

Pregame

  • I’m officially on Team Tankside but I also want Lars Eller to have a fantastic game today. Leave it to Michel Therrien to find new ways to screw with my feelings, even as I continue to descend into an abyss of apathy.
  • Thanks for showing me multiple replays of Carey Price’s injury, Sportsnet. I really appreciate it, you know, with how the Canadiens‘ season is going and all. Oh good, lets follow that up with an entire segment discussing his injury in great detail. Sigh.
  • Confession Time: Growing up, Jarome Iginla was one of my favourite hockey players. I guess this means he’ll score today and break my heart.

First Period

  • Let’s play a drinking game, take a sip of your alcoholic beverage of choice every time Patrick Roy is mentioned. Besides, functional livers are for wusses.
  • How awesome does Lars Eller look out there, eh? He’s gunning for a goal today. Unfortunately, he also knows that he could score a hat trick today and still lose his spot to David Desharnais tomorrow. C’est la vie.
  • GOAL MONTREAL! Good news: Andrei Markov scored the first goal of the game, off a sneaky drop pass from Tomas Plekanec.
  • Bad news: Ben Scrivens is doing his best impression of a flailing octopus in net.
  • Both the Avs and the Habs exchanged penalties, but Colorado’s power play looked positively Montreal’esque. Montreal’s power play on the other hand, actually looked…dangerous. Hmmm, however could this have happened? It’s almost like playing your best forwards on your first power play unit is a good idea. Who would have thought?
  • In an unforeseen turn of events, the Habs have outshot the Avs AND have a lead coming out of the first period. But then again, the Avalanche can’t defend their way out of a wet paper bag.

Second Period

  • The Canadiens pick up right where they left, applying a ton of pressure on Colorado and earning an early power play in the process. Naturally, this leads to a short handed goal for the Avs. ¯_(ツ)_/¯
  • GOAL MONTREAL! Never fear, Lars Eller is here! If you listen closely, you can faintly hear all of RDS imploding in unison.
  • That set of a weird sequence of events for the Avs. First, they took out their out their own players (courtesy of a MacKinnon/Tanguay collision). Then Iginla scored a goal that was waived off due to goalie interference. And to top it all off, the Avs got a penalty on that same sequence. All in all, the Avs were doing a great shot shooting themselves in their own feet.
  • Hmm, is Scrivens’ flailing octopus technique…working?
  • Lars Eller giveth and Lars Eller taketh. An ill-timed penalty on number eighty one’s part, put the Avs on the man advantage and this time, Iginla had no trouble blasting one past poor Scrivens. If you listen carefully, you can even hear RDS breathing a giant sigh of relief.
  • My love for Jarome Iginla makes that goal sting that much more. Thank you for rubbing it in, Hockey Gods.
  • I’m becoming more and more convinced that the Hockey Gods are secret Bruins fans.

Third Period

  • Please don’t go to overtime! Please don’t go to overtime! Please don’t go to overtime! Damn it, this game is so going to go to overtime.
  • You know who looks like himself, after a very long time? Max Pacioretty. The captain had more shots on goal during a single period today then he had all game against the Coyotes. Hmm, I wonder why this is…
  • Don’t ask me why Tom Gilbert leads the Habs in ice time.
  • Thanks Iggy, I really appreciate it.
  • And the Canadiens lose again because that’s how they roll.

Three Stars

1. Either that or something about trading Subban.

2. This is an apt description as well.

3. The Habs say otherwise.
