In recent years the U.S. National Development Program has been producing a plethora of skilled players, and Colin White seems to be another one of those talented prospects.
White is projected as a first-round target for his well-rounded skills, including good speed, quick hands, and a knack for possessing the puck. He turned those assets into scoring last season, netting 23 markers and 31 assists with the U.S. National Team. Scouts are quick to credit him with an eye for the net, meaning that he has the ability to always be in the right spot at the right time. His playmaking abilities are well noted as well, which makes him a constant threat on the ice.
He was an alternate captain for the USA during the under-18 tournament this year, scoring six goals and three assists in seven games. An impressive showing, but not as impressive as stats during the World U17 challenge the previous year; 10 goals and eight assists in six games.

Not only does he create scoring chances, but White also possesses a high level of defensive awareness, which is what makes him a valuable asset in every shift. He’s not overly imposing when it comes to stature, but he holds on to the puck quite well, and doesn’t let his size hinder his defensive coverage.

Strong, well-rounded, two-way center…one of the best skaters for this draft…great speed with an excellent stride and tremendous acceleration…moves quickly and is tough to handle when he hits top speed…has great strength on his skates and is tough to separate from the puck…battles hard for possession…drives the net and is strong in close…can beat a goalie in many ways…has a great shot and also distributes the puck well…a very hard worker with an edge to his game…great on defense with a great defensive stick and strong defensive-zone awareness…always in the right spots on the ice and he is a tremendous worker.
A prolific scoring threat, Colin White is a strong 3-zone player with an eye for scoring chances. Thinks the game at a high level and always seeks to make an impact on the ice, with or without the puck. Never seems to be outbodied and is an exceptional skater. Puck-possession is definitely a strength. All-in-all, a skilled, 200-foot player that does all of the little things right and is able to make a large impact on the game and its outcome.

Thoughts
Finishing sixth in scoring among all USDP players may not sound very impressive, but it must be noted that White battled mononucleosis, and a wrist injury, both of which hampered his ability to produce.
There are two main questions that arise when discussion White’s draft stock.
Is his lack of high-end talent a concern? He skates well, he shoots the puck with skill, and excels in most aspects of the game, but none of his qualities truly stand out.
But more importantly, will he still be on the board once the Habs take the podium? If so, they’d be wise to consider adding a player of his ilk to the prospect pool.
