When the preliminary round was over absolutely everyone thought that Canada’s destined opponent in the quarter finals would be Switzerland. Unfortunately for the Swiss, head coach Ted Nolan and Latvia had other plans. In one of the biggest wins in Latvian history, they defeated Switzerland by a score of 3-1 in the qualification round to advance to their quarter finals match up with Canada. It is the first time in five attempts that Latvia made it to the Olympic playoffs.
Edgars Masalskis is having a good tournament in nets for Latvia. He was incredible in the opener versus Switzerland, stopping 38 of the 39 shots he faced. His 32 save performance versus Switzerland in the qualification round was equally impressive, and secured the win along with some timely goal support from his forwards
Despite his great play, it was announced that Kristers Gudlevskis would get the start in net for the Latvians.
Forward Kaspars Daugavins will not play due to a virus, and will be replaced by Berzins.

Carey Price will get the start for Canada, as it seems that Mike Babcock has found his preferred goaltender. Price’s poise and presence has been complimented by the likes of Jonathan Toews and Duncan Keith, and it comes as no surprise that he’ll be Team Canada’s starter moving forward. Roberto Luongo will serve as a back-up, although it’s doubtful he’ll be called upon.
Mike Babcock will scratch reigning Norris Trophy winner P.K. Subban once again, along with Matt Duchene, as Martin St. Louis draws back into the lineup.
After a disappointing start to the tournament, Chris Kunitz will be reunited with the man who enabled him to make Team Canada, Sidney Crosby.
The winner of this game will move on to the semi-finals and face the winner of USA/Czech Republic.
