Another slow start for the Habs, who fell behind 8-2 in CF within the first five minutes, giving up three shots on net. The Ducks jumped to a 1-0 lead 6:31 in on their 9th shot attempt and 5th shot on net of the first period. Once down a goal, the Habs began to build an offense, drilling 6 shots on John Gibson within a span of five minutes after the Ducks scored. The Habs’ slow start was offset by a very strong finish to the period, and to end the first period the Habs were up 15-10 in shots and 23-19 CF.
Both Jiri Sekac and Devante Smith-Pelly had somewhat quiet periods, with Sekac having the edge CF% 67-62. Smith-Pelly did also get a couple of shots on net, but maybe it was Torrey Mitchell who has made the biggest impression on his new team in the first period.
